A not-for-profit organization based in London who have a team of skilled and dedicated volunteers, coordinated by eight full-time staff. They also have an Advisory Panel that includes economics professors, authors, entrepreneurs and people from the financial industry who know monetary systems need to change.
What They Consider The Problem
Right now, most of the money in our economy is created by banks. Banks create money up to 97% which is, in reality, digital/imaginary, in the form of numbers in your bank account, when they make loans. This means that they effectively decide:
• How much money there is in the economy.
• Where that money goes.
(Only a small portion of physical currency, i.e. coins and notes, are put into circulation by governments each year).
During the American Civil War in the United States, Abraham Lincoln bypassed the banks and printed the greenback to pay for the cost of running the war against the South. When the war was over, there was no debt because there was no interest to be paid on it. The same principle can be applied to large infrastructure projects by governments. We have been conditioned to think that debt is "normal", but this does not necessarily need to be the case.
How is money really made by banks? - Banking 101 (Part 3 of 6)
The control of the creation of money, in the hands of banks, has contributed to the problems of:
- Unaffordable housing
- High unemployment
- High personal debt
- Growing inequality
- High government debt
- Financial crisis and economic instability
Positive Money's Solution
We believe, the power to create money must be removed from the banks that caused the financial crisis and returned to a democratic, transparent and accountable body. New money must only be created and used to benefit the public and society as a whole, rather than just a financial sector.
We have detailed and workable proposals that would allow this to happen. Even the 'Financial Times' has written about the need to prevent banks from being able to create money.
